Weekly Update – 4 July 2022

Markets last week The improvement in risk markets during the previous week could not be sustained due to concerns about a possible US recession and unrepentant statements from central bankers meeting at an offsite in Portugal last week. US Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Jerome Powell said that the “Fed will not let the economy slip…

Weekly Update – 27 June 2022

Markets last week After two dreadful weeks previously, the last few days have been something of a relief. Perversely, it was bad economic news that drove the change in direction – that and a very oversold position in many assets. From the worries about inflation and the pace of central banks’ reaction to it that…

Weekly Update – 20 June 2022

Markets last week Last week was easily the worst for quoted assets in the volatile markets we have seen this year. It is fair to say that no investment was spared: equities, bonds, commodities. Even the almighty energy sector which has been providing the only positive equity returns this year, was completely trashed, slumping 15%…

Weekly Update – 13 June 2022

Markets last week Risk markets suffered another major drop last week, through a combination of higher bond yields, weaker surveys, a surprising inflation surge in the US and heightened fears of central bank tightening going beyond current expectations. In the UK, economic growth turned negative in April with all sectors in the red.  The European…

Weekly Update – 6 June 2022

The movement was probably a technical bounce, since nothing fundamental improved in economic data and the minutes from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) did not signal any reprieve in the…

Weekly Update – 23 May 2022

Share markets had another choppy week, with worries that rate hikes, cost pressures and supply chain disruptions would further weigh on the Consumer – particularly in the US where we saw some profit downgrades from two of the big retailers. This led to the US share market having its 7th consecutive weekly fall and dragging the global share market down with it too.

Weekly Update – 16 May 2022

Stock markets had another rough week with some very choppy moves on concerns over monetary tightening to combat high inflation and a possible recession. A decent bounce on Friday repaired some of the damage, but share markets still finished down for the week, with government bond markets being one of the few places to hide.…

Weekly Update – 9 May 2022

Stock markets had another turbulent week, with stocks rallying hard after the Federal Reserve meeting on Wednesday night, only to give up all the gains on Thursday. The week saw rate rises from both the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England, which in turn put pressure on the bond markets as yields rose.…

Weekly Update – 25 April 2022

Last week was shaped by hawkish talk from Central Bankers (around controlling inflation) and a high-profile subscriber miss from Netflix. This saw both bonds and stock markets sell-off, with the US being the biggest drag on the global index. Losses were tempered to some degree by the weakness in the Pound, particularly vs the US…
